الشوط الأول جاء للمان يونايتد من حيث الأداء والنتيجة، أمطر روني ورفاقه مرمى الضيوف بوابل من الهجمات المتتالية أسفرت عن الهدف الأول عن طريق البلغاري برباتوف في أول خمس دقائق من المباراة بعد تحويله عرضية روني إلى هدف برأسه بعد هجمة مرتدة بدأها المخضرم غيغز.

سندرلاند كان لاحول له ولاقوة حيث لم يشكل أي تهديد على مرمى فان دير سار بل واصل المان يونايتد هجماته وأضاع برباتوف هدف محقق بعد ارتطام كرته في القائم وأندرسون بعد ارتطام كرته في العارضة لينتهي الشوط الأول بهدف نظيف وأداء كبير للمان يونايتد.
